First Edition Signed
First edition of Pynchon's National Book Award-winning novel. Octavo, original cloth. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Herb Yellin- Regards, Thomas Pynchon." The recipient Herb Yellin, was theÂpublisher and founder of Lord John Press, considered by many to be one of the most important small presses of the 20th century. He formed a friendship with the author, Thomas Pynchon. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with some light wear to the extremities and a closed tear to the rear panel. Jacket design by Marc Getter. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Books signed and inscribed by Pynchon are one of the great rarities of twentieth century literature. â Gravity's Rainbow is one of the few truly great novels of the century, and at the same time one of the most disappointing, disturbing, maddeningâ ¦. One of the most original fictive styles to have been developed since Joyceâ (Contemporary Novelists, 1136). It is regarded by many scholars as the greatest American novel published after the end of the second world war, and is "often considered as the postmodern novel, redefining both postmodernism and the novel in general" (Pohllman). Time named it one of its "All-Time 100 Greatest Novels", a list of the best English-language novels from 1923 to 2005.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. A set of three editions - unrevised proof, hardcover first edition and softcover first edition - plus two items comtemporary to book publication from Viking publicity executive. 1) A two-page statement of provenance that recounts discussions at Viking about how to market and price Pynchon's 760-page book and publicize it as "no one at that time had ever published a major literary talent in hard/soft cover at the same time". 2) Cassette, running time approx 12 minutes of Prof Irwin Corey's acceptance speech for Pynchon at the National Book Award for the reclusive Pynchon who refused to acknowledge or accept the award. The hardbound copy is fine with just a trace of toning along the edges of teh white dw flaps. The softcover copy has a slightly faded spine. The unrevised proof is in blue wrappers, marked "Office Copy" in blue ink on front cover, has a paper clip still in place top edge (with attendant trace of rust to ffe), and has slight sun fading spine and partially fornt cover. Galley no. left blank, Pub date penned-in "Feb. 28" and Price penned-in "15.00 cl. / 4.95 pa" A rare trio of books made unique by the Viking House provenance and Corey's remarks in Pynchon's stead, no other copies of which are known to exist. (Also included is a copy of Smoke Signals, New York Book Fair issue, August 1984 which includes a brief article about - and transcript of - Corey's bizarre comments on Pynchon's behalf.).

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Fine First Edition copy of the reclusive author's landmark third novel. At 760 pages, a massive opus in breadth and scope, as well as in major literary significance, this winner of the National Book Award was also awarded the prestigious William Dean Howells Medal for best work of fiction to appear in the United States over a five-year period. While many less-than-presentable copies appear on the market, this copy is truly fine, in its original first state dust jacket, bright and crisp, without the spine-fading endemic to this title, equally fine but for a single half-inch closed tear to the upper real panel and the most miniscule, really negligible, rubbing to the tips. A beautiful example.

Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First edition. A Fine copy of the book with a previous owner's bookplate on the front end paper, otherwise clean and unmarked. In a bright, Near Fine dust jacket that is price clipped, but otherwise presents very well. The author's third book, winner of the National Book Award and the William Dean Howell Award and published in an edition of just 4,000 copies. Pynchon's post-modern masterpiece, a rich, vertiginous book of sometimes frustrating complexity. Written in 1973, and set at the end of World War II, Gravity's Rainbow would be awarded both the National Book Award and be selected for the Pulitzer Prize. (Although it was denied the latter by the Pulitzer board on account of a particularly controversial passage.) Writing in The New Yorker, poet L. E. Sissman called Pynchon a "mathematician of prose" - and this is considered his greatest work. Gravity's Rainbow appears on Time's list of the 100 greatest English language novels written from 1923 to 2005. "A work of paranoid genius, a magnificent necropolis" (Contemporary New York Times review). Fine in Near Fine dust jacket.

An exceptionally influential novel, winner of the William Dean Howells Medal (for the best work of fiction to appear in the U.S. over a five-year period), the National Book Award, and a 1973 Nebula Award nominee. "A sprawling slipstream novel about a World War II psychological warfare unit full of weird characters, one of whom seems to be determining the pattern of V-2 rocket attacks by his sexual activities but refuses to submit to study and possible control. Extraordinarily elaborate black comedy." - Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II-885. "U.S. writer, all of whose works are fabulations which resemble SF under some interpretations, though the paranoia-wracked worlds his protagonists inhabit defeat any secure reading of the malign figurations of reality . Enormous and complex, GRAVITY'S RAINBOW offers no repose for a secure reading, but the search for its main protagonist (whose sexual climaxes predict and attract rockets from the V-2s on) fabulously posits an sf world . Pynchon's general concerns with entropy, paranoia and communication have had a fruitful effect on some sf writers." - Clute and Nicholls (eds), The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction (1993), p. 981. New York: The Viking Press, 1973. 8vo. Original orange cloth with embossed design to upper board; spine lettered in red; upper edge orange; pictorial dust jacket with a design by Marc Getter; pp. [viii], 3-760, [ii]; a near-fine copy, lightly compressed to spine ends; in very good, clipped jacket, faded to spine (as is common), lightly rubbed and worn to extremities, particularly along the spine. First edition, in a later state dust jacket - or possibly one intended for export - which has the ISBN 670-34832-5 to the lower panel, but lacking the '0273' code to the front flap, denoting first issue. Pynchon's National Book Award-winning novel is set primarily in Europe at the end of World War II. Widely considered to be his greatest work, it was selected by the jury for the 1974 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, but was rejected by the Pulitzer Advisory Board due to its controversial content. "The sprawling narrative comprises numerous threads having to do either directly or tangentially with the secret development and deployment of a rocket by the Nazis near the end of World War II. Lieut. Tyrone Slothrop is an American working for Allied Intelligence in London. Agents of the Firm, a clandestine military organization, are investigating an apparent connection between Slothropâ s erections and the targeting of incoming V-2 rockets. As a child, Slothrop was the subject of experiments conducted by a Harvard professor who is now a Nazi rocket scientist. Slothropâ s quest for the truth behind these implications leads him on a nightmarish journey of either historic discovery or profound paranoia, depending on his own and the readerâ s interpretation. Despite its historical setting, the work resembles science fiction in its elaborate fabrication of sinister technology" Britannica.

8vo., pp. 760; original orange cloth, lettered in red on spine, top edge stained orange; an excellent, almost-fine copy in a clean, bright dust-jacket with a slightly sunned spine.First edition. 'Gravity's Rainbow is literally indescribable, a tortured cadenza of lurid imaginings and total recall that goes on longer than you can quite believe', wrote critic Michael Wood on first publication of this, Pynchon's magnum opus:'It is crowded, technical, serious, self-indulgent, frivolous, and very heavy going. It doesn't let up. [And yet] Pynchon's mind is so fertile and engaging that it doesn't matter if his books seem stilted now and again. The mind is plainly not stilted, indeed I wonder whether it could ever find a book to fit it, whether it is even, in the end, a writer's mind at all, and not a mind of some general, undefined brilliance which has happened to find itself writing' (New York Review of Books, March, 1973).
